The Sonos Roam is a new high-end smart speaker with support for Apple AirPlay 2, so it plays nicely with iPhone or other Apple computers.
The tubular accessory weights in just under a pound, but Sonos says, “precision-engineered acoustics deliver the clarity, depth, and fullness you would expect from a much larger speaker.”
Roam is designed for use in the home or on the go. At home, it streams audio over Wi-Fi. On the move, it uses Bluetooth.
The speaker has a IP67 rating, so it’s dustproof and fully waterproof, It includes silicone end caps and physical buttons to protect against drops or bumps.
Sonos promises Roam offers up to 10 hours of continuous playback on a single charge, or up to 10 days of battery life when not in use. It’s recharged through a USB-C cable or any Qi wireless charger.
Sonos Roam has AirPlay 2, not just Bluetooth
This is just the latest speaker from Sonos to support AirPlay 2, Apple’s system for wirelessly streaming audio between devices. The tech allows allows iPhone, iPad and Mac users to send audio to this smart speaker. This could be podcasts and Apple Music, but also the audio from movies and shows.
As for rival options, the device includes built-in Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
It’s available in shadow black or lunar white, and measures in at 6.6 inches by 2.4 inches by 2.4 inches. That makes is considerably smaller than the company’s first portable smart speaker from 2019.
Sonos Roam is available for preorder on Tuesday on its maker’s website at $169. The speaker will hit store shelves April 20.
